Vendors Charge Exorbitant Amounts for Essential Goods Amidst Shutdown!

Residents from Powai have complained that local vegetable vendors and grocers in the area have formed a cabal and are extorting customers by charging exorbitant prices. This development comes just two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21-day nationwide shutdown during his March 24, 2020 address to the country, permitting only essential services to remain open to the public. Local vendors who have set up shop inside the IIT Market, Ghokle Nagar, Chaitanya Nagar and the IIT Main gate area have been accused of selling essential goods such as rice, milk, vegetables among other such necessary commodities for over double the market price.

“The bhaji wala’s and grocery store owners have formed some sort of extortion racket charging exorbitant prices suiting their whims and fancies. They are taking advantages of a global emergency to put a few more rupees in their pockets. They have exercised a complete lack of empathy and have displayed a blatant disregard for civic cooperation in this situation! Severe action should be taken against these organised band of opputunists!” Lashed out a resident.

After witnessing ongoing acts of profiteering for over two days, several Powai activists united and interacted with the errant vendors and store owners, successfully persuading them to cooperate with the residents in these testing times. Social workers Balvir Singh, Kailash Kusher, Nitin Bhavsarand Ramesh Jadav brokered an understanding with the sellers and have threatened to take the matter to the police if the extortion continues. “We visited all the stalls against whom residents have complained and interacted with them. They have understood and agreed to comply and cooperate with the residents,” said Kusher.

Balbir Singh told this publication “We have urged these vendors not to be so callous during these tough times and made sure they understand that they will be inviting legal action if they continue act this way.” The situation has seemed to have been resolved as on now.
