With the entire country in lock-down amidst the Corona virus outbreak and the only public movement being allowed is to access essential services, medicines and food items, the vulnerability of homeless and migrant labourers came to light who neither have shelter nor the money to avail the same. Moreover, police too are exposed to their share of hardships keeping people off the streets in the oppressive heat.
Doing their bit to serve them, a group of Powai youth has come forward to provide food and essentials to pavement dwellers and homeless people living under bridges. The group has promised to continue their activity until the lock-down is in place and life returns to normalcy. The group identified as Yuva Bhim Garjana Mandal has organized community kitchens that cooks and provides food for homeless persons, the police and security staff of various establishments.
Rama Konkan, Ravidnra Wahule, Ajay Shinde, Praveen Ambhare, Subhash Awhad, Lankesh Gadekar, Vinod Bhadarge, Vinod Pakhare, Vikas Wahule, Nitin Shetty, Aakash Pakhare, Hanumanta Koli, Ajay Wahuleand Manoj Pakhare have been leading the charge in this heartfelt gesture of community service. “Those engaged in regular conventional jobs can somehow manage to have two square meals but those doing odd jobs and homeless have it rough as it is and are the worst hit during such lock-downs. They might virtually die out of hunger if they are not provided for and we have vowed never to let anyone in and around our area to die out of hunger,” the group has said.
