In an effort to contain the rapid spread of the Coronavirus, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) S Ward sealed off two areas in Powai, with residents asked only to step out for only absolute essentials. The first ‘Containment Area’ is between Kala Khamba (Rodas Circle) on the Main Street to Orchid Avenue and the other is a small residential region in Sainath Nagar in the IIT Market locality.
Banners of both the BMC and the Mumbai Police announcing the decision and the rationale behind the same have also been put up in the roads leading to these areas. Authorities have threatened action against violators under various sections of the Mumbai Police Act and the Epidemic Act that the state government invoked to prevent crowding in public places.
Visitors and residents from other areas are prohibited here, according to BMC officials, who pointed to “positive” and “suspected” COVID 19 cases from these areas that led to the action. The two Powai areas are a part of the 140 other areas in Mumbai city limits that the BMC has sealed off with assistance from the Mumbai police, after the emergence of suspected and confirmed cases.

As of April 1, the number of positive cases in Maharashtra stood at 335 with 181 cases in Mumbai alone. Thirty-three new Corona positive cases were registered in the state as on April 2, of which 30 are from Mumbai alone, 2 are from Pune and 1 from Buldhana district.
As for deaths, 3 people from the state have so far died owing to the virus, of which two of the deceased were in Mumbai. Of those, one was a 75-year-old man and the other is a 51-year-old male and a 50-year-old man from Palghar. Curiously, none of the three have any history of foreign travel, leading to suspicions of community transmission from a section of the medical and public health fraternity.
However, the successful discharge of 41 Corona recovered cases in Maharashtra also serves as a silver lining, lending credence to many scientists’ assurances about the disease being not as fatal and deadly, with its infection rate being the only danger.
